Self-adhesive Seals

Self-adhesive seals are the easiest to install thanks to the self-adhesive strip below the seal. You don't need any special equipment, just a pair of scissors to cut the seals to the correct length. Before installation it's good to measure the gap you're weatherproofing. If the door/window doesn't have an existing weatherstrip you can compare the new on to, one good way to find out the correct size is to insert blue tack into the gap, close the window/door and measure the width of the flattened blue tack. The correct size of the seal is 2-3 mm thicker than the flattened blue tack.

RK Weatherproof self-adhesive seals are available in four profiles (E, P, D and Omega), three colours (white, brown and transparent) and three different materials (EPDM, TPE and Silicone). The profiles are named after the look of the seal, see examples below.

Profiles of self-adhesive seals

EPDM Rubber Seals

EPDM rubber seals are high quality, durable and flexible. They're available in E, P and D -profiles. The EPDM seals endure varying temperatures well (-40 °C – +60 °C) and depending on the use and conditions they can last up to 8 years. The seals come in two colors: white and brown.

E-Profile is small (9 x 4 mm) and it's suitable for 2-3,5 mm gaps.
P-Profile is medium (9 x 5,5 mm) and it's suitable for 3-5 mm gaps.
D-Profile is large (9 x 7,5 mm) and it's suitable for 3-7 mm gaps.

TPE Rubber Seal

In addition, RK Weatherproof range offers a transparent self-adhesive Omega-profile seal that's made out of TPE rubber. The diameter of the Omega -profile is 7 mm. It is suitable for 2-6 mm gaps which works well for most windows and doors. The seal is transparent.

TPE rubber is environmentally friendly and long-lasting. It works especially well with e.g. summer cottages and old windows where there is more natural movement of the wood and the gaps can vary a lot. The seal can last even up to 12 years, depending on its use and conditions.

Silicone Seal

The newest addition to the self-adhesive seals is the self-adhesive silicone seal. Silicone seals were previously only available in traditional O-profile which had to be installed with acetoxy curing silicone. The new silicone seal is available in Omega and P-profiles with a self-adhesive strip below.

Silicone is the highest quality material in seals and can last even up to 20 years, depending on the use and conditions of the seal. It retains its elasticity and color well, even in strong sunlight. The seal is available in white and brown.

Omega -profile diameter is 7,5 mm and the width of the adhesive strip is 9 mm. Diameter of the P -profile is 7 mm and the width of the adhesive strip is 9 mm. Both seals are suitable for 2-6 mm gaps. The main difference between the Omega and P -profiles is that the P-profile can easily be stapled to the door/window without damaging the seal itself. This comes in handy e.g. when the door/window in question is in heavy use and opened and closed often.

INSTALLATION

1. Remove old seal

Remove the old seal from the window/door. You can use the removed weatherstrip to help you choose the correct new seal.

2. Clean the surface

When removing old self-adhesive seals the old glue sticks to the surface. You need to clean the old adhesive with e.g. RK Acetone or a similar oil-free product.

3. Install the new seal

Install from up to down (seal will install straighter). Take care not to touch the adhesive strip, as it decreases the adhesion strength. Cut the seal in each corner - don't bend! Staple the corners for extra grip.
